Assessment Writing
Item Writing
Every teacher thinks they know how to write assessments, but they rarely do. I learned that when I joined Rosetta Stone’s curriculum team in 2013 and received cross-functional training from the assessment team. I embraced every opportunity to fine-tune my assessment writing skills. Later, when I had the chance to join the assessment team part time, I jumped at the offer. I wrote and reviewed items for a standardized English proficiency test, and I trained writers on the Common European Framework of Reference. I have also written items for the International Test of English Proficiency (iTEP).

Reading Exams
At the University of Colorado Boulder’s International English Center, I was the reading/writing coordinator. When I took that position, one of the first things I did was collaborate with the assessment coordinator to revise our reading assessments to be more relevant and valid. By the time I left, we had revised all the reading assessments across the program and radically reshaped the culture around assessment.
